Niles – 135th Anniversary
Today, Niles operates a residential treatment center and provides day programs to assist youths and families, but its roots go back to 1883. At that time, Samuel Eason began caring for homeless, orphaned children near 18th and Vine Streets. It started with one man, an African-American bricklayer, doing what he could for those in need, and through the decades, more has been done. In September, an event was held to mark the 135th anniversary. Mayor Sly James presented a mayoral proclamation. He also gave a speech, as did the Honorable Ardie Bland, board member. The festivities even included cake.
