Cheers to Volunteers! – Rachel Rindner

Rachel Rindner started volunteering at a young age. She was only eight years old when she served as a peer model at Camp Determination, an overnight camp for youths with autism. Kelly Lee, who directed the camp, was impressed by Rachel’s “sweet nature, sensitivity, and kindness.” When Kelly founded Camp Encourage, Rachel was eager to be involved. “For many years, Rachel has served in the role of a camp counselor, then as a group leader,” Kelly noted. “Such volunteers are assigned to a small group of campers (with and without autism), and accompany the campers to all of the daily activities, and encourage social growth, recreation, and self-esteem during each overnight camp session.” Rachel now has a degree in occupational therapy, and she continues to volunteer with Camp Encourage. We think she’s a terrific peer model for everyone.

Rachel Rindner got the tangles out of a camper’s hair.
